13241324In the laboratory courses, students will learn the fundamentals of elds (chemistry, biology, and physics) in the Department of Materials and Life Sciences from the aspect of chemistry. In the laboratory courses oered in the second semester of the second year as well as the entirety of the third year, students will conduct fundamental chemistry experiments and receive guidance on important points in experiments as well as analytical, synthetic, and physicochemical methods. ey will learn how to handle reagents and instruments and about safety measures in experiments, under the guidance of the teaching sta, RAs, and TAs.Materials and Life Sciences Laboratory B (Compulsory Course in the Department of Materials and Life Sciences)1 : A teaching assistant (TA) explains how to use a separatory funnel. Do not forget to wear a laboratory gown and glasses in the lab. 2 : Organic substances are analyzed on a color reaction dish. 3 : A faculty member answers students' questions during experiments. 4 : A student is seriously conducting experiments. In this laboratory course, students will learn the basic methods of physical chemistry, including methods of handling equipment and computational chemistry, and acquire advanced academic knowledge and ability on materials and nanotechnology. It is one of the specialized experiments and is given in the second half of the third year. Students will perform experiments on mass spectrometry, radiation measurement, and electronic and vibrational spectroscopy. ey will also learn the basics of instrumental analysis using gas chromatography. In exercises in computational chemistry, students will learn and apply both the simple Hückel method and the ab-initio molecular orbital method.Physical Chemistry Lab. (Compulsory Elective Course of Department of Materials and Life Sciences)Experiments in "gas chromatography" and "basics of mass spectrometry." 1 : Results of measurement of gas chromatograms are being discussed. 24 : e specic charge of charged ne particles is measured using an ion trap device and a high-speed camera. 3 : A teaching assistant (TA) helps students perform experiments.Faculty of Science and Technology■Examples of classesDepartment of Materials and Life SciencesLearning of Science and Technology 19
