Message from the Dean of the Faculty of Science and TechnologyAbout Our Facultye role to be performed by science and technology grows exponentially by the day. I believe that we can say a global society can largely be attributed to the rapid progress of science and technology. In terms of communication tools, a large number of tools have been created in a single generation, with one old tool being replaced after the other. e fruit of science and technology races can be disseminated around the globe almost instantaneously and becomes very familiar to all of us. Moreover, the recognition of science and technology in society has increased, and new technology is accepted right away these days. ose who learn and grow in our Faculty of Science and Technology must be aware of these phenomena and the roles that are brought about by science and technology. Under our school axiom, “Sophia – Bringing the World Together,” you should communicate the wisdom that you acquire at Sophia University using your own words, spread it through your own actions, and develop it on your own. is is the students’ mission and it should become an intrinsic part of your life one day. e Faculty of Science and Technology is an organization that helps each individual student full that mission and we believe that our work will last all through life. In order to extend lifetime support to students, the FST is ceaseless in its endeavors and continues to evolve. In 2008, we were reorganized from ve departments and one research laboratory into the current three departments, that is, the Department of Materials and Life Sciences, the Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Department of Information and Communication Sciences. is has made it possible to foster human resources having sensibility and knowledge, i.e., “cross-disciplinary knowledge,” which allows collaboration with other related elds while learning the basics of an extensive range of science and technology and mastering the chosen specialized eld. We also set out to address globalization as an organization with extraordinary speed and began oering Green Science and Green Engineering Courses in the autumn semester of 2012 targeting international students. ese classes are conducted in English. Since the autumn semester of 2013, we have been oering the Green Science and Engineering division targeting graduate students. is course is conducted entirely in English from the lectures to dissertation guides. Japanese students learn with students from abroad and share the programs oered by the course, thereby being able to acquire the capacity to perform a role in a global society. Furthermore, in 2014, Sophia University was selected as the Top Global University Project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and is working on global education more vigorously than before. In this way, at the FST of Sophia University, you will change along with the times and students while pursuing and nurturing your own mission.
