Faculty of Science and TechnologyMessage to High School StudentsResearch and CareerPartly because I attended high school that oered a special course in science and mathematics, I wanted to go on to university in the eld of mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology or geology. I was interested in chemistry and physics in particular, and I wanted to become a scholar of these elds in the future. It is fun to be able to understand phenomena or conditions systematically that you were previously unable to understand. Moreover, it should make you even happier when you come across something that you are unable to understand on the basis of conventional theory or common knowledge. It is not that if one is interested in science and technology, it would be suicient to be good at science and mathematics subjects alone. We all have likes and dislikes as well as strengths and weaknesses, but it is important to develop one’s favorite subjects and those one is strong at, and master subjects one is not good at. As results obtained and accomplishments made should be announced to the public, it is essential to acquire both English and Japanese language abilities. It is important to read as many books and newspaper articles as possible. 1. Why I decided, in high school, to go on to a science and engineering university 2. Good points and fun of science and engineering courses3. Things you should do now (in high school)When I was a primary schooler, I looked forward to receiving every issue of the monthly magazine called Gakken and Science. Also, for independent research during the summer vacation, I was interested in science, such as a drop experiment. I became enthusiastic about math when I was a middle schooler and read many books on math and mathematicians. In high school, I found physics and chemistry to be fun and wanted to develop my career in these elds in the future. My father died of stomach cancer in the autumn of my high school junior year. At that time, cancer was an incurable disease. In order to learn and research means of dispelling cancellous cells that metastasize and destroy an organ, I considered what career path I should choose, including science and engineering faculties. The greatest fun is to be able to expose yourself to the cutting edge of research. My research is on creating things that do not exist in the world and the university offers an environment where I can come up with an idea and actualize it on my own. If you work on research like this, the target of communication automatically expands to researchers abroad and social connections, along with studies, becomes international. This, I believe, is the real thrill.Research on experimental science in the science and engineering eld starts with experiments that you conduct using your own hands. By following a hypothesis that you developed yourself, carrying out a great many experiments, and gaining the results without being afraid of failure, you will be able to unravel a mystery or make a new discovery. In addition, a new discovery has the possibility of creating a wide variety of contact points with dierent elds, which is yet another appeal. I feel excited when formulating a hypothesis, conducting an experiment, and identifying the results. It might be a good idea to start with exploring a dream that you want to full in the future. To do so, you should not narrow down your interests but absorb a lot of things with curiosity. If you sharpen your senses with such a stance, you should be able to nurture “brain power” that allows you to think exibly out of the box.ere is no denying that you need to memorize by rote such things as formulas to succeed in the entrance exams. However, I want you to acquire the habit of identifying underlying principles. Nowadays, you can get a lot of information easily on the Internet, but it is important not to swallow it whole in the belief that it cannot be wrong if it is written so, or not to have preconceptions. I believe that it is essential to make a habit of looking into things on your own to judge whether information is correct or not.1.
